Major boost to infrastructure: Giant strides

There was a time when the world’s powerful countries and prominent investors used to bemoan about India’s ‘Hindu quality’ of infrastructure, lying in a state of extremely dilapidated condition. From power to roads to highways to ports, India was short of quality infrastructure, a major hurdle in getting quality foreing investments. It was not an unusual phenomenon as quality infrastrucuture is key to attracting conspicuous investments for any country. It becomes more important in a country of India’s magnitudue where the overall backwardness is so rampant and uniform. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, however, did a yeoman’s job in taking India’s infrastrucutural empowerment to a new height. From rail corridor to multi-laning of roads and linking of metros, Vajpayee led NDA government laid the foundation of a new and vibrant India, which now looks poised for scaling further heights in infra development, thanks to giant strides under the regime of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to overhaul the country’s infrastructure. It is true that three years is not a great time to bring palpable, physical visibility in major infra projects, but the Centre’s intention to expand India’s infra capacity underlines the fact that the current regime at the Centre is determined to make things different and better for coming generations. The government has to its claim a never before award of contracts for the construction of 34,018 km of highways during 2014-17. This is more than double of what was awarded during 2011-2014. Needless to say roads are pivotal to the country’s economic empowerment along  with power. Better road connectivity between India and other neighbouring countries including Myanmmar, Nepal and Bangladesh will certainly add another feather to India’s road infrastructure. As per India-Myanmar-Thailand (IMT) Motor Vehicle Agreement a trial run of passenger vehicles on the IMT Trilateral Highway up to Naypitaw in Myanmar was carried out during 9-14 November, 2015 in which Indian vehicles  travelled to Myanmar on Imphal-Mandalay-Bagan-Naypitaw route and back and Myanmar vehicles joined the Indian vehicles on the return journey from Naypitaw to Imphal and returning to Myanmar. India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh (BBIN) have already inked a landmark Motor Vehicles pact for the regulation of passenger, personnel and cargo vehicular traffic among the four South Asian neighbors in Thimpu in June 2015. Several trial runs of Cargo and passenger vehicles have been conducted under this agreement in preparation of its implementation. On the front of augmenting infrastructure in difficult areas—Chenani-Nashri tunnel, an infrastructure marvel in Jammu & Kashmir, is one of the major achievements as this tunnel India’s longest road tunnel has been built in a record time. On the anvil are many such projects including Zozilla tunnel. The recenlty inaugurate India’s longest bridge over Brahmputra river in Assam comes as a big connectivity boost beween Arunachal Pradesh and the rest of the country via Assam. Plans are afoot to have futuristic-looking automated and driverless pods  ‘flying across’  to carry commuters around in big cities and metros. The dream has only just begun. A metrino pilot project is in the offing between Dhaulakuan and Gurugram to carry commuters in suspended pods to ease traffic woes. ...
